The Kimmel Center turns 10 this year, and the 2011-2012 season has just been announced. This year’s season has many highlights, including 10 performances honoring Philadelphia hometown artists. The season opens on October 1st with a performance by Audra McDonald, who also performed during that first season 10 years ago. Other notable performances will be made by Esperanza Spalding, Tony Bennett, k.d. lang, Herbie Hancock, Itzhak Perlamn, and more.

Jeffrey Seigel’s Keyboard Conversations® will return for another year this season, as will the Jazz Up Close series, which will celebrate “Philly legends the Heath Brothers (Oct. 15), Benny Golson (Dec. 3), Lee Morgan (Feb. 25) and McCoy Tyner (Apr 14) with performances by artists who re-imagine their works.” (Kimmel Center Press Release). Other season series will be the Organ Rectials series and Great Orchestras Series. The former will feature performances by Marilyn Keiser, Jeremy Filsel, and Jeffrey Brillhart with The Canadian Brass. Here’s what the press release had to say about the Great Orchestras Series:

Continuing a decade-long tradition of hosting the world’s most distinguished orchestras in Verizon Hall, this season the Kimmel Center’s Great Orchestras series brings conductor John Eliot Gardiner leading Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique; the New York Philharmonic with Alan Gilbert conducting and featuring mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato; and violinist Joshua Bell joining and directing Academy of St. Martin in the Fields.

You can subscribe to each series or even create your own right now.
