If you haven’t heard by now, Beck Hansen recently released a new album called Song Reader. His first album since 2008’s Modern Guilt came with a pretty big caveat though: it would only be released as sheet music. Beck has not recorded the songs, only written them and released them via sheet music for others to interpret and play themselves. Many, many interpretations have been uploaded and posted on SongReader.net, but, as far as we can tell, the Portland Cello Project is the first to record and release all 20 songs.
Below, you can stream PCP’s take on each track with some help from a lot of special guests, including: members of Radiation City, Nate Query (of The Decemberists), Sam Howard, and many more. Find the full list of guests and read more about the release here.
For a related note, World Cafe Live will host some of the Philly area’s finest musicians and bands to perform their own take on the album. The fantastic lineup includes Toy Soldiers, The Districts, Levee Drivers, Modern Inventors, Ali Wadsworth, The Lawsuits, and Perseverance Jazz Band. Check out the full lineup and purchase tickets here.
